Emboss
Emboss Printing
(Embossing / Blind Embossing / Registered Emboss / Deboss)
Emboss printing is a pressure-based finishing technique that creates a raised (kabartılmış) 3D relief on the material surface. It enhances tactile feel and visual elegance — commonly used for luxury packaging.
- EMBOSS PRINTING
Embossing uses male & female metal dies to press the substrate between them, forming a raised design.
What Creates the 3D Effect?
- Male Die (Positive) → pushes upward
- Female Die (Negative) → receives material
- Pressure + Heat → permanently reshapes the paper/cardboard
No ink is required (Blind Emboss).
But you can combine it with:
- Hot Foil Emboss (Foil + Emboss together)
- UV Emboss (Spot UV + Emboss)
- Printed Pattern + Emboss (Registered Emboss)
- MAIN EMBOSSING TECHNIQUES
2.1 Blind Emboss
No color, no foil. Purely raised surface.
Effect: Soft, luxurious, minimalistic.
Used for:
- Luxury packaging
- Fine stationery
- Certificates
- Premium branding
2.2 Foil Emboss (Combination Die)
Emboss + Hot Foil in one operation.
Creates metallic 3D raised foil.
Used for:
- Perfume boxes
- Cosmetic & jewelry packaging
- Luxury corporate boxes
- Premium logo highlights
2.3 Registered Emboss
Emboss aligned perfectly with printed artwork.
Example: printed logo + raised emboss exactly matching shape.
Precision requirement: ±0.2 mm
Used for:
- Branded boxes
- High-detail logos
- Pattern embossing
2.4 Deboss (Reverse Emboss)
Indentation rather than raised surface (gömme kabartma).
Used for:
- Leather-look packaging
- Business cards
- Folder covers
- Premium books
2.5 Multi-Level Emboss
Die has multiple heights → 3D sculpture effect.
Used for:
- Premium cosmetic boxes
- Detailed logos
- Illustrative emboss artworks
2.6 Textured Emboss / Pattern Emboss
Repeating texture is pressed into material:
Patterns include:
- Linen
- Leather
- Geometric
- Fabric texture
- Woodgrain
Used for:
- Handmade packaging
- Paper bags
- Book covers
- EMBOSS PRODUCTION PROCESS (STEP-BY-STEP)
Step 1 — Artwork Preparation
- Vector design required (AI, PDF).
- Separate emboss layer prepared.
- Registration marks placed.
Step 2 — Die Manufacturing
Die types:
- Magnesium → fast, affordable, low durability
- Brass → highest quality, long-lasting
- Steel → large-volume jobs
- Polymer → cheap, for short-run jobs
Die engraving methods:
- CNC engraving
- Laser etching
- Chemical etching
Brass dies allow:
- Multi-level emboss
- Sculpted emboss
- Fine details
Step 3 — Make-Ready (Makine Ayarları)
- Align die with paper
- Adjust heat (70–150°C)
- Set pressure
- Set depth of emboss
Step 4 — Embossing Operation
Material passes through:
- Heating
- Pressure
- Counterforce
Emboss depth: 0.15 mm – 1.5 mm depending on substrate.
- MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Best materials for embossing:
Paper / Cardboard
- 250–600 gsm cardboard
- Bristol
- Kraft
- Duplex / Triplex
- Ivory board
- Textured specialty paper
- Soft-touch laminated paper
- Black dyed-through paper
Materials to avoid:
- Very thin papers (< 200 gsm)
- Highly coated gloss paper
- Low-density recycled paper
Flexible Materials
- Leatherette
- PVC
- Textured boards
- COST FACTORS
Embossing price depends on:
Die Type
- Magnesium: low cost
- Brass: expensive but best quality
- Steel: industrial volumes
Dimensional Complexity
- Single level (simple)
- Multi-level (complex)
- Sculpted (premium)
Artwork Size
Bigger emboss zone → higher cost.
Order Quantity
Low quantities → unit price high
High quantities → much cheaper
Material
Hard surfaces need stronger dies.
- ADVANTAGES OF EMBOSSING
3D premium look
Luxury tactile feeling
No ink required
Highly durable embellishment
Elevates brand perception
Works with hot foil, UV, printing
- DISADVANTAGES OF EMBOSSING
Higher setup cost
Longer production time
Precision registration required
Not suitable for all thin papers
Die cost increases for complex artwork
- COMMON USES
